Youth Involved with the Juvenile Justice System

Youth ages 13 and 18 years of age who are involved with the juvenile justice system or have been at any point in their life.

Population:

  • Approximately 53,000 youth under the age of 18 are involved with the juvenile justice system.

National Trends:

These youth face challenges while incarcerated as well and upon reentry. Many youth within this population became incarcerated due to factors which resulted from living in impoverished conditions, diagnosed & undiagnosed mental health conditions, low levels of education of their parents, attending failing schools with teachers who have a lack of behavior management techniques, lack of structure in the home due to parents working extended hours outside of the home, and youth with parents who were incarcerated and they were placed in juvenile detention facilities due to lack of available foster placement.
